Aid Assistance to Vulnerables in Batang Kapas Sub District, Padang

OCHA visited Mercy Corps projectin Batang Kapas, Pesisir Selatan District on November 4, 2009. The project took place in 2 villages, Taluk and Koto Hilir, 105 km down sout Padang.

According to Damage and Loss Assessment (DALA) final report on October 200, 3,471 houses in Batang Kapas Sub District were damaged. Out of which, 267 houses were severely damaged, 527 were moderately damaged, and 2,677 were slightly damaged.

Mercy Corps, in its West Sumatra earthquake response, already distributed non-food items: hygiene and recovery tool kits to 503 households in these villages. The beneficiaries are vulnaerable people living in Pesisir Selatan District, where tsunami, earthquake and landslides are the potential hazards.

In this distribution, Mercy Corps work closely together with Komunitas Siaga Tsunami (KOGAMI), head of villages and existing village-disaster preparedness teams. Using participatory method, they facilitated surveys and meetings to identify beneficiaries, type and number of kits will be distributed.

Mercy Corps distributed he same non-food items to 800 households in Talaok on Nov 16, 2009 and Koto Barapak on Nov 17, 2009. It also plans to distribute non-food items and WASH emergency facilities to target the ramining 4,197 beneficiaries in Padang Pariaman and Pesisir Selatan Districts on the third and fourth week of November 2009.

Mercy Corps, in partnership with KOGAMI, is running Private Partnership for Disaster Management (P3DM) Program since December 2008 in Nagari Surantih and Salido, Sutera and IV Jurai Sub Districts. It aims to build capacity on Disaster Risk Reduction of government officials, students, community, and private sectors.
